Vonage WiFi Phone

Interested to hear the opinions of anyone that has had experience with this especially if you have travelled with it overseas http://www.vonage.com/device.php?typ..._id=MSTRBP0018

We actually have one of this and like the quality and ease of use-- have had some issues with connecting to some WPA/PSK secured WiFi hotspots but other than that like it.

As an aside has anyone successfully managed to load Vonages VOIP software stack on a non-vonage branded WiFi handset? Is this firmware even available anywhere?

UTStarcom Vonage WiFi Phone

Have had this for about 1 year now and love it. Was never able to connect it to a network secured with WPA but then again did not try too hard. Absolutely love it especially for open unsecured wireless networks and these abound all over. I carry it along with my regular cellphone and it has allowed me to drop my cellphone bill to next to nothing since I often manage to find an open wifi network;

Vonage WiFi & EVDO Combo Pricing

Yes we now offer $20 off a vonage WiFi phone for the purchase of an aircard (Sprint in our case since Alltel has no Rev0 -- more on this later) and a mobile router (any mobile router i.e Kyocera KR1, ZTE Bavo H110, D-Link DIR450, Linksys 3G Router, Top Global MB6000, MB8000 or MB6800). Note that we clearly list one caveat that you need RevA EVDO for good quality of service of your Vonage WiFi phone. VOIP basically needs two main elements for a good voice quality: good uplink bandwidth (for EVDO this is the reverse channel to from aircard to the tower) and good latency. EVDO Rev0, despite the fact that many people have reported reliable Vonage voice quality over it, is not cut out to support VOIP. One other important thing to note is that despite the fact that VOIP bandwidth utilization is not as heavy as say video streaming some unlimited data contracts might clearly prohibit this sort of usage -- mainly because cellular carriers want you go get voice plans as well and may also be lining up their own voip offerings.

Interesting application

I'm going to have to try this out ... since my company pays for the aircard anyway I dont mind coughing up $24.99 a month for the WiFi phone since I can use it at home anyway and get rid of my regular phone service ... on a different topic a friend of mine purchased the regular vonage adapter (Linksys i believe) and sent it to India and her parents are able to call her just as if there were in the U.S ... plus since they have a 408 number all her other relatives in the U.S can call her parents for free

Vonage in India

Yes i actually do that for my parents in Madras ... actually i have the $14.99 plan that only allows 500 minutes since vonage-to-vonage is free and they are not calling many other non-vonage U.S numbers anyway. This was a super deal given that I had been spending close to $100 a month on calling cards!

I do the same for my parents. I was sick and tired of spending so much on long distance calls and finally made the switch. I was amazed at the savings!!
