  • Will the KR1 work with the EX720 using an Express to PCMCIA adaper?

We have gotten this question a lot: Will the KR1 work with the EX720 using an Express to PCMCIA adaper?

The answer is both yes and no. Let me explain. The EX720 has been found to work on the KR1 using a Express to PCMCIA adapter with the older firmware version for the KR1 (RK1008). Although; with newer firmware versions like RK1010 it has not been able to work.

So to make it simple, if you want to use the the EX720 in the KR1 try using the older firmware version RK1008.

Sprint EX720 and KR1 (with Express to PCMCIA adapter)

For now it's fine to rollback the firmware from 1.010 (shipping version) to 1.008 since 1.009 only adds support for KPC680, U720 and Pantech PX-500 and 1.011 improves frequency of network status updates. So let's hope newer firmware either adds back EX720 support or does not add functionality or fix bugs that cannot be ignored.

If getting a totally new data card and you must have support for an express slot laptop consider getting the Ovation U720 although it could have potential power issues in areas with low received signal strength there are clear and very cheap ways to mitigate this. This i woudl say is better and more economical than getting and express card and then getting an adapter.

Also the EX720 is supported by the Cradlepoint using an Express to USB converter.
