Sprint Nextel Corp. is one of five companies to sign an agreement with the government of Taiwan to help speed the deployment of mobile WiMAX technology in that country.

The memorandum signed by both companies in Taipei yesterday will enable them to discuss "cooperation in global roaming, network conformity, interoperability, common service platform enablement, standardization and marketing," according to Sprint Nextel.

Sprint Nextel Corp. has reportedly been selected as one of five major companies which will work with the government of Taiwan to help deploy WiMAX technology in that country.

Reuters reported that Taiwan committed to invest $664 million over the next few years on WiMAX. The five companies chosen to help with the endeavor were Sprint Nextel, Alcatel-Lucent, Starent Networks Corp., Motorola Inc. and Nokia-Siemens Networks. The news service also reported that Sprint Nextel will consider building a WiMAX research and development facility in Taiwan; Alcatel-Lucent already has mentioned similar plans.
