Pepwave MAX 6 WAN Multi-WAN Router Possibilities

Yes this router available here really does support 6 simultaneous WAN connections with true loadbalancing/ failover capability.

The Pepwave MAX has the following WAN inputs:

• 2 USB Slots -- can connect to 3G/ 4G USB cards allowing for EVDO, HSPA, WiMax connection (or for that matter an Express Card if you use an Express-to-USB converter)
• 1 PCMCIA Slot -- for 3G/ 4G PCMCIA cards.
• 1 Express Slot -- for 3G/ 4G Express cards.
• 1 WiFi 200mW 802.11b/g -- can connect directly to a nearby WiFi AP. (Very nice for RV's & Campers that go to areas with WiFi available).
• 1 Ethernet WAN -- anything that has an RJ45 ethernet output can connect here. This includes the output of a Cable/ DSL/ Satellite modem, T1 output, WiMax modem, a Point-to-Point Bridge, a Point-to-Multipoint Bridge. Heck you could even connect this to the output of another 3G router or even another Pepwave MAX.

Upload speed through Pepwave MAX

Yes this is bidirectional. It has both inbound and outbound policies so you can use it to increase the upload bandwidth. But it's very important to understand what this device can and cant do (and indeed any loadbalancer).

For example if you are the only user on the LAN and you are uploading a file and you don't have any additional client software to split up the upload stream into different streams then you will not see any benefit from using this. Now if you have 2 users then rather than sharing the measly 500kbps or so available for 3G then the 2nd user can upload using a different WAN and now you both have a 500kbps channel whereas before you might have had around 250kbps each. This is tantamount to an increase in speed but realize that you can never really increase the bandwidth of a single WAN since this is constrained.

Now if you have a large upload stream and you have software to split this up into multiple streams and you upload them using different WANs then this would take a shorter time to upload so it would be as if your speed improved but in reality each WAN is at the same max upload speed.
