Bought a car top antenna but didn't see improvement in speed. Actually seemed faster without it. Any tips on locating the antenna and handling the extra wire?

No minimum separation required — plugging in the antenna adapter disables the aircard's patch antenna. Coaxial shielding of RG58 contains RF signals fully. WiFi at 2.4 GHz and Sprint PCS at 1.9 GHz have enough separation not to interfere.

Connection goes from very fast to very slow. What low end download speeds should we see with Sprint?

Low end depends on market. 900 kbps consistently means RevA market. See speed comparison.

Trouble with simultaneous requests. Checking email while surfing slows things down. Is that normal?

1xEVDO Rev0 and RevA are capacity limited. You and your wife through same aircard count as 1 user (one public IP). Speed degrades if more people connect to same tower. Try direct aircard connection and compare RSS in dBm with/without antenna.

Router admin shows all bars lit but connection can be slow. Sometimes 3 bars gives fast connection.

This suggests the datarate loss is not related to RSS.

No problem! We have corporate customers moving to EVDO for satellite offices — 800-900 kbps is not bad.
