For orienting cellular antennas it's important to have a good received signal meter — bars are not a good RSSI indicator. Put the phone in test mode to read RSSI in dB: Phone Test Modes PDF.

For aircards, the connection utility already shows RSS in dBm. For Sprint, mouse over the connection manager RSSI indicator or use the menu settings. Use tower location info to help orient. Attached: RSSI_Sprint_GilbertAZ.pdf.
