  • Kyocera KR1 Mobile Router & Sprint U720 USB Modem Potential Issue

The bundle of the Kyocera KR1 router and the Sprint U720 aircard available here: http://www.rfwel.com/shop/?target=pr...8&cat=1&page=1 might have 2 potential issues:

    1) Since there's no firmware upgrade specifically for the U720 at this time (12/20/06) you might not get maximum speed; some people are reporting a datarate hit in the 20's%. This is the similar situation as happened with the S720 before the firmware upgrade. This is my opinion is not a significant penalty given the benefits of having the KR1 router accept a USB EVDO modem directly for its WAN backhaul. Plus the firmware will come!

    2) The U720 ships with a Y-Cable to allow it to be simultaneously plugged to 2 USB adapters so that it can draw more power from the USB ports when the received signal strength is low – the KR1 router only has 1 USB port. The solution of course is to slap on a high gain antenna on the U720 so that the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) mechanism of the U720 is not operating in the high power regime.

    USB ports for U720

Will the U720 work with it plugged into an external hub? Doing so could help this issue and help in other situations, too, for instance where you just need more USB ports for any particular reason.

Exactly. However, it MUST be a powered hub not just a port replicator powered by the Kyoceras USB port as this would beat the intent . We actually have a low cost powered hub here: http://www.rfwel.com/shop/catalog/Hi...Hub-p-990.html that we bundle with the MB6800 & U595 combo.
