  • T-Mobile UMTS

T-Mobile USA is expanding it's UMTS footprint ( Finally ). T-mobile would like to have 27 major markets utilizing UMTS by the end of 2008 ( Very Soon

T-Mobile now has UMTS access in*Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, the New York metro area, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and San Diego and plans to expand to Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle later this fall. The backhaul agreements are meant to increase bandwidth and access of applications using HSDPA technology as well as to expand service in Tampa, Orlando, South Florida, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Memphis.

T-Mobile is trying to make more of a 3G presence to give AT&T, Sprint and Verizon some competition. They have a lot of catching up to do.

FYI: UMTS is the base technology of HSDPA. HSDPA is just a firmware upgrade to UMTS hardware to allow for higher speed. AT&T went directly with HSDPA but most places in the world has UMTS. So UMTS is slower than HSDPA.
