  • How to Set Up Dial-up Networking Using Bluetooth Technology for the BlackBerry

    To set up a BlackBerry smartphone to be used as an external modem to connect a computer to the Internet via Bluetooth Technology, follow the steps below:



    1. Set the Bluetooth wireless technology to Discoverable mode on your BlackBerry smartphone.

    2. Pair your BlackBerry smartphone with your computer.

    3. Set up the Internet Access Point Name (APN) (one time only).

    4. Configure dial-up networking (one time only).

    5. Connect to the Internet using dial-up networking.


    Task 1 - Set Your BlackBerry Smartphone to Discoverable Mode

    Note: Research In Motion (RIM) provides limited support for the tethered modem; the installation of the Standard Modem Driver is supported on a computer with an Intel® 486 or higher processor.


    You will need to contact your service provider to obtain the user name and password that is necessary to configure dial-up networking. make sure you ask them if there are additional charges for connecting to the Internet using the BlackBerry smartphone as a tethered modem.

    Complete these steps below:



    On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Bluetooth.
    Display the menu and select Options.
    Set the Discoverable field to Yes.
    Display the menu and select Save.


    Task 2 - Pair Your BlackBerry Smartphone with Your Computer



    Complete the following steps on your computer:



    In the Control Panel, double-click Bluetooth Devices.
    Click Add.
    Select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box and click Next. The Bluetooth software searches for any Bluetooth devices in the area that are discoverable.
    When your BlackBerry smartphone is found, select it and click Next.
    Select the Let me choose my own passkey option.
    Type a passkey in the field provided and click Next. A message appears on your BlackBerry smartphone prompting you to Enter passkey for <computer name>.
    On your BlackBerry smartphone, type the same passkey as in step 6, then click the trackball.
    On your computer, when the Completing the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard screen appears, click Finish.
    On your BlackBerry smartphone, when asked to accept an incoming Bluetooth connection, select Don't Ask Again and select Yes.
    Using the steps in Task 1 above, turn off Discoverable mode by setting the Discoverable field to No. This step is optional.


    Task 3 - Set up the Internet Access Point Name (APN)



    Complete the following steps on your computer:



    Open the Control Panel and double-click Phone and Modem Options.
    In the Phone and Modem Options window, select the Modems tab.
    Select Standard Modem Over Bluetooth Link and click Properties.
    In the Standard Modem Properties window, select the Advanced tab.
    In the Extra initialization commands field, type the following:
    +CGDCONT=1,"IP","<your Internet APN>"



    Note: If you do not know your Internet APN, or if you do not have an Internet APN, contact your service provider.



    Click OK.
    In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK.


    Task 4 - Configure Dial-up Networking



    Complete the following steps on your computer:



    Go to Start > Settings > Network Connections.
    Right-click Bluetooth DUN connection and select Properties.
    Select the Networking tab.
    Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
    Click Properties.
    In the new window, click Advanced.
    In the new window, on the General tab, clear the Use IP Header Compression check box.
    Click OK to close all open windows.
    Go to Start > Settings > Network Connections.
    Double-click New Connection Wizard. The New Connection Wizard opens.
    Click Next.
    Select the Connect to the Internet option. Click Next.
    Select Set up my connection manually. Click Next.
    Select Connect using a dial-up modem. Click Next.
    Select only Modem - Standard Modem Over Bluetooth link. Click Next.
    If the Select a Device screen appears, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box. Click Next.
    Leave the ISP Name field blank. Click Next.
    Complete one of the following steps:
    If your BlackBerry smartphone operates on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, type *99# in the Phone number field. Click Next.
    Type the user name and password provided by your service provider. If your service provider has confirmed that this information is not required, leave the fields blank. Click Next.
    Click Finish.


    Task 5 - Connect to the Internet Using Dial-up Networking



    Note: During this procedure, do not operate the BlackBerry® Browser or any third-party applications on the BlackBerry smartphone. An active data session may interfere with the modem connection. Also, make sure an ethernet connection is not active at the same time.



    Complete the following steps on your computer:



    Click Start > Settings > Network Connections > <name of your new connection>.
    Type the user name and password provided by your service provider. If your service provider does not require this information, leave the fields blank.
    Click Dial.
